It's easy to spot a Great White Egret in the Everglades. Look for a long, thin white neck and its likely attached to a bird that stands four feet high, has a wingspan of 51 inches, and struts through shallow water. Then at rest it may fly to a perch and preen for its royal court. These graceful waders that can live to twenty-three years, were once hunted for their feathers. The Great Egret is now the symbol of the National Audubon Society, an organization that was founded to protect such birds.
